Course Overview
The Imaging and Radiotherapy Techniques Course is required for the Medical Radiology Health Technicians job position.
This professional figure performs the examinations established by the radiologist. Its functions are as follows: deals with the maintenance, activation and use of the instrumentation; performs registration of exam data and preparation of diagnostic reports; takes care of relations with the patient; takes care of the management of the operations concerning the safety of the exams; carries out radiological investigations and radiotherapy treatments, protecting the radioprotection of the patient and the operators; collaborates the correct management and updating of radiological folders; takes care of the management and transmission of the radiological image in reference to information security and privacy, during the whole diagnostic process.
The course provides a good understanding of the fundamental basic subjects and subject lessons to support apprenticeships in Traditional Radiology, Computerised Tomography, Magnetic Resonance, Arteriography and Intervention Radiology, Nuclear Medicine and Radiotherapy for students’ professional training. The disciplines which characterise Course are: Diagnostic Techniques by Imaging and Radiotherapy, Neuroradiology, Applied Medical Science Techniques, General Surgery, Musculoskeletal Diseases, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Occupational Medicine, Respiratory Diseases and Anaesthesiology, Data Manipulation Systems, Electronic Bioengineering and Business Organisation. Moreover, supplementary disciplines in Professional Ethics and Health Management Science.
By the end of the course the student will have a final practical test which is a prerequisite for the profession as well as the degree thesis.
Learning Objectives
At the end of the Course students will:
- be familiar with scientific methods and able to apply them in real situations as well as knowing the legal norms and ethical and bio-ethical issues;
- have the ability to empathize with end-users, colleagues and other professionals (health and others);
- have the ability to be work in a team and in accord with defined degrees of autonomy and the ability to enter work environments;
- have the necessary knowledge to apply methodologies and instruments for checking, evaluating and reviewing quality;
- be able to accomplish the management and archiving of radiographic images;
- have the ability to collaborate in evaluating psycho-social disorders and the assisted person’s potential by carrying out rehabilitative interventions on persons with psychic disorders within a therapeutic programme formulated by a multidisciplinary team;
- have sufficient ability and instruments to communicate and manage the appropriate data to draft technical/scientific reports.
The Course develops as follow:
1st year: the good understanding of the essential theoretical scientific disciplines; the fundamentals of the profession of health technician for Medical Radiology and of the concepts of radiation safety, in order to be able to take on the first apprenticeship in a professional environment and acquire the basic competences.
2nd year: looking more deeply into specific sectors, procedures and diagnostic techniques for imaging in Breast Pathologies, Computerised Tomography and Magnetic Resonance. The course also covers Relational and Communicative Competences. The apprenticeships will allow the student to put into practise the knowledge, methodologies and techniques he has learned.
3rd year: more specialised subjects like Intervention Radiology, Neuroradiology, Nuclear Medicine and Radiotherapy. The second semester focuses on understanding the Methodologies of the profession, Health Legislation and Health Service Organisation as well as the Legal Principles, Bioethics and Ethics of the profession. The student gradually learns to be autonomous and responsible with expert supervision. Professional competence is acquired theoretically and practically to guarantee that by the end of the course the student is completely competent to carry out his professional job. The course highlight is the clinical apprenticeship professionally supervised and tutored, and coordinated by a course specialist lecturer as per EU norms.
Students can also customize their study plan with Elective Educational Activities and freely chosen Training Activities among those offered annually by the University Course on the teachers’ proposal (computer courses, additional foreign language courses other than English, seminars, participation in conferences and congresses, etc.)
