Course Overview

The Psychiatric Rehabilitation Techniques Degree, dating back to 1982, has a remit to:

  • identify physical, social and psychological needs and evaluate the assistance requirements of different age groups, cultures and health statuses in various social environments;
  • collaborate in evaluating the psycho-social disorder and the psychic disability associated with the mental disturbance, as well as identifying the healthy potential of the patient;
  • investigate the resources and impediments within the family and social context and identify the treatment and psychiatric rehabilitation objectives by formulating a specific intervention programme for the patient's recovery;
  • carry out rehabilitative interventions for self-treatment in line with treatment objectives taking into account interpersonal relationships of various complexities, work and home autonomy;
  • monitor, prevent and deal with any critical situations relating to a worsening clinical condition of the patient by swiftly responding and if necessary alerting other professionals;
  • working primarily on prevention in situ promoting reception networks and the management of at risk situations and manifest pathologies
  • carry out educational interventions on mental health for individuals or groups and interventions of therapeutic education aimed at self-managing the disorder, treatment and rehabilitation;
  • work with families and the patient's social context to promote reintegration into the community;
  • establish and maintain a helpful relationship with the assisted person and their family by applying relational dynamics;
  • apply instruments and methodologies to evaluate and revise the quality of assistance referenced by the objectives of the rehabilitation programme and social context;
  • apply the results of rehabilitation research to improve interventions, demonstrate didactic and tutorial ability oriented to training support personnel and self-refreshing one's professional profile while recognising and respecting one's role, personal and inter-personal competences within one's own team and with other multi-professional teams.

A ‘Psychiatric Rehabilitation Technique’s graduate should possess:

  • a good understanding of the fundamentals of physics, statistics and ICT as well as biological chemistry, biology, human anatomy, physiology and general pathology;
  • an understanding of the disciplines relating to the profession of Psychiatric Rehabilitation: psychiatry, nursing sciences and psychiatric rehabilitation techniques, pharmacology and drug addiction, child neuropsychiatry, the bio-informatics of data-bank analysis and ICT competence
  • an understanding of integrated disciplines in the human sciences and psycho-pedagogy, the health management sciences and inter-disciplinary sciences, familiarity with scientific methods and ability to apply them in real situations; the ability to understand and relate to end-users, colleagues and other professionals (health and other);
  • the ability to work in a team and in accord with defined degrees of autonomy and the ability to enter work environments;
  • the necessary knowledge to apply methodologies and instruments for checking, evaluating and reviewing quality;
  • the ability to collaborate in evaluating psycho-social disorders and the assisted person's potential by carrying out rehabilitative interventions on persons with psychic disorders within a therapeutic programme formulated by a multidisciplinary team;
  • the ability to work with families and the individual's social context so as to promote reintegration into the community;
  • the ability to use English in this specialist field and in general exchanges; sufficient ability to collaborate in evaluating programme outcomes for qualifying and rehabilitating individuals in relation pre-defined objectives.
