Livia Manzella

Associate Professor of CLINIC PATHOLOGY [MEDS-02/B]

She was born in Rome on October 29, 1963 and in 1987 she graduated, with honors, in Biological Sciences at the University of Rome, La Sapienza.
From 1989 to 1994 she worked as Postdoctor in the laboratory of Prof. Bruno Calabretta at Temple and Jeffer-son University in Philadelphia, PA, USA where she conducted a research on the role of the transcription factor interferon regulatory factor 1 (IRF1) in the transcriptional regula-tion of the proto-oncogene c-myb in Myeloid Leukemias, and on the role of BCR-ABL in the proliferation of blast cells of patients with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia through the "antisense strategy ". In this time, she was also the winner of a fellowship from the Italian Association for Cancer Research (AIRC).
In 1993, she won a PhD in Immunopharmacology, VIII cycle, at the University of Palermo, and during this period she studied the transcriptional regulation of the Ornithine Decarboxylase (ODC) gene by IRF1.
In 1996 she entered to the Specialization School in Medical Genetics at the University of Catania, where she graduated in 2000 with honors, with a thesis on "the role of the transcription factor IRF1 in the regulation of Fas / CD95 / APO 1 gene in monocytic cells.
From 2003 to 2007, she was a research fellow in the Department of Biomedical Sciences, General Pathology section, of the University of Catania.
By November 2008 she is a researcher, in the Clinical Pathology field, first at the Department of Biomedical Sciences and the Department of Molecular and Clinical Biomedicine and from 2014 of Clinical and Experimental Medicine of the University of Catania.
In March 2009 she graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Catania with final grade 110/110, with a thesis on the role of the transcription factor IRF 5 in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia. In the same year, she got the Medical License.
Since 2009, she teaches Clinical Pathology at different degree courses at the University of Catania, including: Medicine, Dentistry, Techniques of Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Biomedical Laboratory Techniques.
Since 2012, she is doing a training in Oncology at the University Hospital Policlinico Vittorio Emanuele of University of Catania.
